Q&A

What are my options for coatings like powder coat to dress up the engine bay?

Arizona Powder Coat: The place to go for short run powder coating is Arizona Powder Coat on 5301 East Washington. Their number is (602) 220-0553. They have hundreds of colors, and depending on the popularity of the color you choose, usually turn stuff around in less than a week. Remember that the item has to be spotless and clean or you might be subject to stripping charges.

Jet-Hot: High Temp Coatings www.jet-hot.com in Tempe, AZ. A DSM valve cover was quoted at $65 in silver, $85 in grey, black, or blue.

HPC: High Performance Coatings www.hpcoatings.com in Chandler, AZ.

Custom Thermal Coatings : They are on 3517 East Illini Street and there phone number is (602) 243-0071. Talk to Robert Vega Sr. They have silver plus many other colors it is the same stuff they use at JetHot but half the price.

Swain Technology (aka Swain Tech Coatings): Thermal Barrier Coating. www.SwainTech.com in Scottsville, NY.

I have a 2.0L non-turbo DSM. Is it possible to add a turbo?

Yes, it's possible with enough time and money. Adding a turbo to a non-turbo car tends to cost as much or more than it would to sell the car and to buy a stock turbo charged version. This is a much better route to go because it will be more reliable and serviceable and everything was designed for the turbo. Not to mention, you'll probably get more performance from a factory turbo than a turbo kit. If you must, visit the www.2gnt.com/forums page and look for the FAQ. There's also a turbo forum where you can ask any questions about turbocharging an NT DSM. If you really have to do it, the suggested kit is the Hahn Racecraft kit.

Where can I get race gas (Over 91 octane) in the Phoenix area?

Note, a lot of these places do not sell high octane fuel Nov - April because the fuel is (apparently) not available with the fuel additive that is required by law.

  • UNOCAL on 56th Street and Bell (southeast corner) has pay-at-the-pump 100. They also have higher octane leaded out of a barrel if the shop is open.
  • There is a place in down town Glendale called Kings Balancing. This place has racing fuel from 100-110 octane. It's not VP though - it's 76. Price starts at about $3.75/gal. If you want VP fuel speedworld has it. But i would call them first to see if they are selling it during the week.
  • If you need monster gas like VP C-12 or C-16 then a motorcycle shop is your best bet. There is a shop on Cave Creek north of Thunderbird/Cactus that has C-12 all the time (and some oxygenated stuff that is $10+/gallon). The big bike shop on Hayden in the Scottsdale Airpark usually has 110 octane VP. If you are a west-side homie, there is a big bike shop on West Bell Road that has good gas. The bike shops sell a ton of
leaded racing gas so it is usually very fresh.
  • Mobil at Chandler Boulevard about 48th street that has Trick 101 at the pump.
